The Surprise AZ Police Department has launched a fantastic campaign “Hot Cars Can Kill”

This іѕ a fantastic campaign and рublіс аwаrеnеѕѕ рrоgrаm tо rеmіnd аnd іnfоrm реорlе of thе deadly consequences оf lеаvіng children іn a lосkеd саr wіth the wіndоwѕ rоllеd uр and I want tо remind everyone thаt thіѕ аррlіеѕ tо уоur реtѕ аlѕо

“We want the public to be aware that a child or pet who is left helpless in a hot car can suffer serious injury or even death,”Surprise Police Chief Mike Frazier said. “We hope that by getting this message out, people will make extra efforts to ensure that they don’t forget their loved ones in a vehicle or use it as a babysitter.”

I agree with Police chief Michael Frazier’s idea to purposely leave an important item in the back seat next to your child or pet so you remember to check the back seat when leaving a parked and locked up vehicle.

The National Highway Safety Administration states heatstroke is one of the leading causes of death among children, and a child’s body temperature can heat up three to five times faster than that of an adult. Death occurs when a child’s body reaches 107 degrees, the NHSA said.

Follow this Check list that every responsible driver should memorize when traveling with Children and pets.

• Never leave children alone in or around cars; not even for a minute.
• Put something you’ll need like your cell phone, handbag, employee ID or brief case, etc., on the floor board in the back seat.
• Get in the habit of always opening the back door of your vehicle every time you reach your destination to make sure no child has been left behind. This will soon become a habit. We call this the “Look Before You Lock” campaign.
• Keep a large stuffed animal in the child’s car seat when it’s not occupied. When the child is placed in the seat, put the stuffed animal in the front passenger seat. It’s a visual reminder that anytime the stuffed animal is up front you know the child is in the back seat in a child safety seat.
• Make arrangements with your child’s day care center or babysitter that you will always call if your child will not be there on a particular day as scheduled.
• This is common courtesy and sets a good example that everyone who is involved in the care of your child is informed of their whereabouts on a daily basis. Ask them to phone you if your child doesn’t show up when expected. Many children’s lives could have been saved with a telephone call from a concerned child care provider. Give child care providers all your telephone numbers, including that of an extra family member or friend, so they can always confirm the whereabouts of your child.
• Keep vehicles locked at all times; even in the garage or driveway and always set your parking brake.
• Keys and/or remote openers should never be left within reach of children.
• Make sure all child passengers have left the vehicle after it is parked.
• When a child is missing, check vehicles and car trunks immediately.
• If you see a child alone in a vehicle, get involved. If they are hot or seem sick, get them out as quickly as possible. Call 911 or your local emergency number immediately.
• Be especially careful about keeping children safe in and around cars during busy times, schedule changes and periods of crisis or holidays.
• Use drive-thru services when available. (restaurants, banks, pharmacies, dry cleaners, etc.)
• Use your debit or credit card to pay for gas at the pump.

Thomas Rice an author for the Emergency Medical Journal caused quite a stir by a paper he published last year on the increased risk of car crash fatality due to obesity.

Where his paper concluded Findings from the study suggested that obese vehicle drivers are more likely to die from traffic collision-related injuries than non-obese occupants involved in the same collision. And we all know knowledge is power he also concluded knowledge is needed to improve seat belt use as well as airbag deployment for obese people as compared to people with a smaller frame as is research to understand the potential role of obesity and accepted safety practices of car manufacturers and injury outcomes.

Mr. Rice, who coauthored the article co-authored with Motao Zhu of the Injury Control Research Center at the University of West Virginia, stated “He was quite surprised that we had quite a little media frenzy,” as they also concluded that obese drivers are almost 80 percent more likely to die in a car crash than people with more moderate Body Mass Indices (BMIs).
Even though weight and overweight issues are right up there with sex, drugs and rock n roll, as virtual topic of neurotic interest, guilt and shame alas all of the rip roar caused by the Rice article died a typical death and everything seemed to go back to normal or should I say politically correct.

Until Humanetics CEO and President Christopher O’Connor of Humanetics Innovative Solutions a Michigan-based firm that manufactures the safety test devices, announced its development of an “obese” crash test dummy.

Christopher O’Connor says his company had been considering the development of a heavyweight and altogether larger dummy for some time, but that the study by Rice and Zhu made the project a number 1 priority for his company.
O’Connor also stated “When you have data confirming that you’re 78 percent more likely to die in an accident if you’re obese, that’s a major problem,” says O’Connor. “The last strongly regulated [crash test dummy product] came out in the 1980s, when only about 15 percent of the U.S. population was obese. Now it’s more than one third, and 40 % of middle-aged baby boomers are obese. The size of the average adult driver has changed dramatically, and we have to address that change in our products.”
O’Connor went on to say, adult crash tests involved a “relatively slender” dummy weighing 169 pounds. “It represented a BMI of a little less than 25, which means it’s no longer relevant. The data [from the Rice and Zhu study] that showed people with a BMI of 35 are 51 percent more likely to die in a crash, and used that as our baseline.”

The new dummy is more representative of an obese American driver, with a 35 BMI and a weight of 273 pounds. The point being Humanetics didn’t just slap on fatty rubbery material to an existing design and call it big-boned.
“People don’t gain weight uniformly from head-to-toe,” O’Connor says. “We had to mimic the way extra weight is distributed on a human body. As it turns out, most of the gain is in the midsection.”
And that seems to be the primary reason for the increased fatality rates among the obese, says Rice. In basic terms, a big belly makes it difficult if not impossible to adjust seat belts properly.

So Why Are The Larger Test Crash Dummies So Important?

Crash test dummy tech is evolving rapidly and in my opinion it can’t happen soon enough. O’Connor cites his company’s newly released advanced model: Thor. “It has many more sensors than earlier models, produces many more channels of data, and provides truly biofidelic responses. It allows you to hone in on the precise degree of injury. Not just that a certain kind of crash in a specific vehicle injures your ribs, for example, but whether it’s the second or third rib, and whether it’s a bruise or a fracture.”

Not only are we getting fatter we are getting older. So what’s next a fat elderly crash test Dummy?

Well you guessed it, because it all gets down to the fact that the United States population is getting older and fatter. And this makes us more vulnerable to injury during car accidents.
Mr O’Conner states “At the end of the day, we just want to make sure everyone is as safe as possible,” he says. “We shouldn’t think these problems are restricted to the U.S. Obesity rates in China and India are growing faster than in this country. These are safety issues that are global in scope, and we have to deal with them.”

Mini Van Driving Moms and Dads everywhere beware!

The Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) just released their safety crash test findings and only one of four mini van style vehicles performed in what the IIHS considers acceptable and that vehicle is the 2015 Toyota Sienna.

The crash testing primarily involved what are called “small overlap front crashes” where the vichle is propelled and crashed into a wall that only covers approximately half the width of the vehicle and typically and shows some of the worst possible outcomes for this type of crash. This type of test is intended to duplicate what happens when the front corner of one vehicle collides with another vehicle or a stationery object like a tree or utility pole. More specifically the crash forces bypass the vehicle’s main energy-absorbing structure. These crashes are considered specifically difficult for minivans to handle, because minivan bodies are typically built on car frames but are much wider than car bodies. Resulting in more of the mini van body is located outside the main structure. Minivans also are heavier than cars.

The Nissan Quest, the Chrysler Town & Country and its twin, the Dodge Grand Caravan, all earn poor ratings. The exception to the disappointing pattern is the 2015 Toyota Sienna, which earns an acceptable rating. It joins the Honda Odyssey, which last year earned a good rating in the small overlap crash test, in the ranks of Top Safety Pick+ award winners. Minivans are popular among parents, a group that tends to be safety conscious, but we’ve only seen two so far that offer decent protection in small overlap crashes,” says David Zuby, IIHS executive vice president and chief research officer.

So the IIHS is intentionally putting these vehicles in a worse case scenario to obtain the most prudent crash test data and this is especially important information for Moms and Dads who transport children and loved ones in  mini vans.

Even though Toyota beefed up the front structure of the 2015 Toyota Sienna to improve it’s performance in these over lap type crashes that happen in every day life as well as on the IIHS test tracks, check out what happened in the test because it didn’t really fare all that well.

• Front end intrusion (how far the dashboard and components moved in) measured as much as 5½ inches at the upper door hinge pillar and instrument panel.
• The crash dummy’s head bounced off the front airbag & immediately slid off the left side thankfully the side curtain airbag deployed and was able to protect the dummies head from the forward movement of the vehicle caused by the intrusion as mentioned above.
• The safety belt also allowed the dummy to move too far forward so add this forward movement to the 5.5 inches of dashboard intrusion and the numbers are staggering.

• On the positive side, data taken from the dummy indicated that the risk of any injuries would be low in a crash of this severity.

However the Nissan Quest didn’t do so well.

The Nissan Quest receives what the IIHS describes as a deceiving for it’s restraints and kinematics of safety belt structures. This part of the safety rating measures how well the safety belt and airbags work to control the dummy’s movement.

Here are the good and bad for the Quest:

• PRO: The crash dummy was held in place by the intruding structure, and the airbag was shoved into its face therefore keeping head injury at low risk.
• CON: The crash dummy’s left leg, from the thigh to the foot, damages were very high, in some cases exceeding the limits of the sensors.
• CON: These poor ratings are attached to model years 20011-2015

Here are the bad and good for the Chrysler Town & Country:

• The Town & Country’s structure buckled around the crash dummy.
• Vehicle Intrusion a whopping 15 inches at the lower hinge pillar and dashboard.
• The crash dummy’s skin on the left lower leg was lacerated by the parking brake pedal.
• The left knee skin was torn by a steel brace under the instrument panel.
• The head barely contacted the front airbag then shanked off  hitting the dashboard and the steering column was forcefully moved to the right.
• The door sill and the steering column both moved in toward the driver. (The side  airbag deployed but provided insufficient forward protection.
• Crash dummy measurement  indicated injuries to left thigh, left hip, left knee and left lower leg would be inherent in a crash of this severity.
• Both Town & Country & Quest showed crash dummy measurement some of the forces  off the chart.
• Results apply to the 2008-15 Town & Country and the 2008-15 Grand Caravan. ( also apply, the 2009-12 Volkswagen Routan.)

I don’t see very much good in these test results. Except more than likely there would be little head trauma however it is apparent that there would be  severe lacerations, possible fracture of the femur and or the Tibia (Thigh and Leg) and in all probability loss of limb for Nissan Quest and Chrysler’s Town & Country.

Vehicles with a good or acceptable small overlap rating, along with good ratings in the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests, qualify for the 2014 Top Safety Pick award. Vehicles that meet those criteria and also earn a basic or higher rating for front crash prevention qualify for the Top Safety Pick+ award.

The Sienna earns its “plus” on the basis of an advanced front crash prevention rating. Its optional system includes forward collision warning and an automatic braking function that reduced impact speeds by an average of 9 mph in the Institute’s 12 mph test and by 7 mph in the 25 mph test.

In my opinion these crash tests should be critical in decision making when purchasing a mini van type motor vehicle. Remember you can replace your vehicle but you can’t replace your children and loved ones. How much is the cost difference worth for the safety of your loved one’s, especially in Phoenix traffic.
